NHK HAIKU MASTERS Talk Session at SU

HAIKU MASTERS is an NHK WORLD TV program. It’s broadcast in about 140 countries in English. HAIKU MASTERS uses a new art from, which they call Photo Haiku. It’s a combination of haiku and pictures. They try to get many people to write a haiku and upload it on their website, and they announce a new “Haiku Master” each month. You can watch the program on NHK WORLD Video On Demand. It’s a free app and people from around the world can watch the TV program.
HAIKU MASTERS has three guidelines. The first is “fusoku-furi”—not too far, not too close, which means it should not be too close or too far from the image in the photo. This means the haiku cannot be just a description of the photo. The second guideline is to make a three-line haiku. The haiku needs to be written in three lines to express the original form or rhythm of haiku. And finally there is seasonality. This means you should express the seasonality in either your photo or the haiku.
NHK Sapporo sponsored a HAIKU MASTERS Talk Session at Sapporo University. It was a two-hour event held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on September 10. The event was free to the public. The talk was about discovering the joy of making photo haiku and the charm of Hokkaido. There were five panelists: Haiku poets Kazuko Nishimura and Kit Pancoast Nagamura, MC Nelson Babin-Coy, and special guests Biei photographer Toshiki Nakanishi and Sapporo University Professor Phillip Radcliffe.
This event was divided into two parts. The first part was for the panelists to create a photo haiku using some of the photographs taken by photographer Nakanishi. Then the two female panelists and Nakanishi created awesome photo haikus. The second part of the program was how to use photo haiku in English class. Prof. Radcliffe showed the guests some photo haikus created by his students. Also, each panelist talked about their own specialty. Many people who attended the event showed an interest in learning more about photo haiku and in watching the HAIKU MASTERS program.
The first HAIKU MASTERS Photo Haiku event was held in Yamagata in July and included poets Nishimura and Nagamura. The special guest at the Kyoto event was Issey Ogata, one of Japan’s leading actors known for his unique and powerful acting ability. He is also a pioneer of Japanese solo stage performances.
The second Photo Haiku event was held in Sapporo, and the third was in Kyoto in November. The special guest at the Kyoto event was writer Hisafumi Iwashita. HAIKU MASTERS holds a Photo Haiku event every two months. The next event scheduled will be in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture in February, 2018. You should not miss it. HAIKU MASTERSとはNHKワールドTVの番組の１つである。この番組は約140ヵ国にて英語で放送されている。HAIKU MASTERSではフォト俳句と呼ばれる新しいアートを題材としている。フォト俳句とは俳句と写真が合わさったアートである。ウェブサイトでは多くの人々がフォト俳句を投稿しており、その中から毎月１人のHAIKU MASTERを選出している。この番組はNHKワールドオンデマンドにて視聴することができる。これは無料アプリで、世界中の人がこの番組を視聴することができるようになっている。
HAIKU MASTERSには３つの心得がある。一つ目は不即不離。これは題材である、写真のイメージと近すぎることもなく、遠すぎない俳句であることを意味する。俳句とは、単に写真の説明のようなものではいけないということだ。二つ目の心得は三行詩であることだ。俳句の独自の形、リズム感を表現するために三行詩で書くことは必須である。そして最後は季節感だ。写真、俳句のどちらにも季節感を表現することは欠かせない。
NHK札幌放送局は9月10日14時から16時までの2時間、札幌大学にてHAIKU MASTERSトークセッションを開催した。このイベントは入場料など全て無料で行われた。このイベントではフォト俳句を作成するうえでの面白さや北海道の新たな魅力を発見しようということが目的である。イベントには俳人の西村和子さん、キット・パンコースト・ナガムラさん、MCとしてアーティストのネルソン・バビンコイさん、スペシャルゲストに美瑛カメラマンの中西敏貴さんと札幌大学のフィリップ・ラドクリフ教授の5人が出演した。
このイベントは2部に分かれており、1部は写真家の中西さんが撮った写真を用い、出演者がフォト俳句を作成。西村さん、キットさん、そして中西さんによる素晴らしいフォト俳句が披露された。2部は英語のクラスでどのようにしてフォト俳句が使われているのかというプログラムだ。ラドクリフ教授は生徒が考えたいくつかのフォト俳句を披露した。また、それぞれの出演者がそれらの特徴について解説をするといった内容だった。来場した多くの人々が、よりフォト俳句について学び、HAIKU MASTERSへの興味を示した。
最初のHAIKU MASTERSフォト俳句イベントは7月に山形県にて行われた。俳人の西村さん、キットさんを含め、ゲストとしてイッセー尾形さんが出演した。彼は日本を代表する俳優の一人で、ユニークで力強い演技でよく知られている。また、日本の一人芝居の第一人者である。2回目のフォト俳句イベントが先ほど紹介した札幌で行われ、3回目は11月に京都で行われた。京都イベントでは、作家の岩下尚史さんをスペシャルゲストとして迎えた。HAIKU MASTERSは2か月ごとにフォト俳句イベントを開催している。次回のイベントは大分県由布市湯布院で開催されます。決して見逃さないように、また、あなたもHAIKU MASTERSに挑戦してみてはいかがだろうか。
