Rock Band King Gnu’s Popularity

King Gnu is a four-piece rock band from Japan. The band name King Gnu was chosen because of the animal it refers to. The gnu has a habit of gradually gathering from spring onward to eventually form a massive herd. The name reflects the band's desire to bring together people of all ages and genders to form a large group of their own. Incidentally, before adopting the name King Gnu, the band was known as Srv.Vinci, but changed its name on April 26, 2017.

King Gnu consists of four members: lead vocalist and guitarist Daiki Tsuneta, back vocalist Satoru Iguchi, bassist Kazuki Arai, and drummer Yu Seki. These four people are incredibly talented. Daiki Tsuneta was born in Ina, Nagano Prefecture. He enrolled in the Department of Instrumental Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts but dropped out because he said he wanted to “make music that connects with society.” He was once a cellist at the Ozawa International Chamber Music Academy, which was founded by Seiji Ozawa.

In 2013, he began his solo musical career under the name Srv.Vinci. Although it initially began as a solo project, it gradually shifted toward functioning primarily as a band following several lineup changes, leading to a name change to King Gnu in 2017. 

He made his major label debut in January 2019 with the album Sympa. That same year, he launched a new group called MILLENNIUM PARADE based on the concept of the Japanese folklore myth Hyakki Yagyō. Is it because of his talent that his popularity skyrocketed?

King Gnu は、日本の4人組ロックバンドである。バンド名「King Gnu」は、その名前の由来となった動物にちなんで名付けられた。ヌーは春頃から徐々に集まり始め、やがて巨大な群れを形成する習性がある。この名前は、年齢や性別を問わず人々を集め、自分たち独自の大きな集団を形成したいというバンドの願いを反映している。ちなみに、King Gnu という名前に変更する前は、Srv.Vinciという名前で活動していたが、2017年4月26日に改名した。

King Gnu は、リードボーカル兼ギタリストの常田大輝、ボーカルの井口悟、ベーシストの新井一樹、ドラマーの関裕の4人で構成されている。この4人は非常に才能に恵まれている。常田大輝は長野県伊那市出身だ。東京芸術大学器楽科に入学したが、「社会とつながる音楽を作りたい」という理由で中退した。かつては小澤征爾が設立した「小澤国際室内楽アカデミー」でチェロ奏者を務めていた。

2013年、彼は「Srv.Vinci」という名義でソロ活動を開始した。当初はソロプロジェクトとしてスタートしたが、メンバーの入れ替わりを経て次第にバンドとしての活動が中心となり、2017年に「King Gnu」へと改名した。

彼は2019年1月、アルバム『Sympa』でメジャーデビューを果たした。同年、日本の民間伝承「百鬼夜行」をコンセプトにした新グループ「MILLENNIUM PARADE」を結成した。彼の人気が急上昇したのは、まさにその才能のおかげなのだろうか？
