Winter Festivals in Japan

The winter months from December to February in Japan are extremely cold. Winter in Japan features many magical festivals that use snow and ice.

First, there is the Sounkyo Onsen Ice Waterfall Festival. It’s held annually from late January to mid-March at Sounkyo Onsen, one of the premier hot spring destinations in Hokkaido. Utilizing the riverbed of the Ishikari River, the festival spans an area of about 10,000 square meters, lined with various sizes of ice sculptures, making it one of Hokkaido’s three major winter festivals. The venue features approximately 30 ice sculptures and a 13-meter-tall ice room, offering plenty of attractions to see. At night, it is illuminated in seven colors and fireworks are set off, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Second is the Chichibu Night Festival in Saitama Prefecture. It’s held on December 2 and 3 to honor and express gratitude to the deities that are enshrined in Chichibu Jinja Shrine. Chicibu Night Festival is said to be one of Japan’s three great hikiyama or float festivals, along with the Gion Maturi in Kyoto and Takayama Maturi in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. It’s the only float festival that takes place in the wintertime. People pull gorgeous floats around Chichibu, while kabuki is performed inside the floats. Fireworks light up the night sky and attract many visitors.

Third is the Nagasaki Lantern Festival in Nagasaki. It started as a festival that celebrated the former Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) and now attracts over a million people as a major event that brightens up Nagasaki in the winter. Areas in central Nagasaki City such as Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown are decorated with roughly 15,000 Chinese lanterns to brighten up the streets of the city.

The festival is filled with Chinese-themed events such as the Emperor's Parade, where roughly 150 participants in extravagant Chinese clothes surround a float with a Chinese emperor and empress. There are also lion dances, dragon dances, and a Chinese circus. Shopping can also be enjoyed at the Hamanmachi venue. Artwork of all sizes also decorate the streets, including a piece that stands an astounding 10 meters in height.

日本の12月から2月にかけての冬は非常に寒くなります。そのため、日本の冬には、雪や氷を使った幻想的なお祭りが数多く開催されます。

1つ目は「層雲峡氷瀑まつり」です。毎年1月下旬から3月中旬にかけて北海道屈指の温泉地である層雲峡温泉で開催されます。石狩川の河川敷を利用し、約1万平方メートルの敷地に大小様々な氷像が立ち並び、北海道三大冬まつりの1つになっています。会場には約30の氷像が立ち並び、高さ13メートルの氷の部屋が展示され、見どころが満載です。夜には7色のイルミネーションでライトアップされ、花火も打ち上げられ、幻想的な雰囲気を醸し出します。

2つ目は、埼玉県で開催される「秩父夜祭」です。12月2日と3日に行われ、秩父神社に祀られている神様への敬意を表す祭りです。京都の「祇園祭」、岐阜県高山市の「高山祭」と並んで日本三大夜祭の一つと言われますが、そのうち冬に開催される唯一のお祭りです。人々は豪華な山車で市内の街を巡り、山車の中では歌舞伎が披露されます。花火が夜空を彩り、多くの観光客で賑わいます。

 3つ目は、「長崎ランタンフェスティバル」です。国の旧正月（春節）を祝う行事として始まった祭りで、長崎の冬を彩る一大風物詩として100万人超の人々が集まります。長崎新地中華街などの市内中心部に約15,000個もの中国ランタンなどが飾られ、長崎の街は極彩色の灯で彩られます。

 皇帝・皇后の御輿を中心に総勢約150人が豪華な中国衣装をまとって練り歩く「皇帝パレード」や「中国獅子舞」「龍踊り」「中国雑技」など、中国色豊かなイベントも満載。浜んまち会場ではショッピングも楽しめます。大小さまざまなオブジェも、街を賑やかに照らします。大きいものは高さ約10mにも及び、見る者を圧倒します。
